The Armeo Spring complex with extended feedback is a passive exoskeleton for rehabilitation and restoration of motor function of the upper extremities (arms and hands) after stroke, traumatic brain injuries, neurological or orthopedic diseases.

The device allows the patient to perform self-initiated exercises to improve muscle strength and increase the range of movements of various joints in order to improve motor skills. In addition, the complex helps medical professionals to assess changes in motor function in patients during therapy.

INDICATIONS

Armeo Spring helps patients to restore mobility and functional work of the arm and hand.
Training is indicated for the rehabilitation of patients with diseases or disorders, including:

• Stroke
• Cerebral palsy
• Spinal cord injuries
• Postoperative injuries
• Neoplasms of the central nervous system
• Traumatic brain injury
• Endoprosthesis of the shoulder or elbow joint
• Injury of the brachial plexus
• Parkinson's disease
• Multiple sclerosis
• Paresis
• Neuropathies
• Muscle atrophy due to prolonged immobilization of the limb
• Musculoskeletal diseases

OPERATING PRINCIPLE

◾ A support with spring mechanism holds up the weight of the arm from the shoulder to the wrist. Thus, the patient can focus on strengthening the arm movement and grip strength with different levels of support depending on their functional strength. Compensation of arm weight significantly increases the effectiveness of exercises. Armeo Spring helps to use even the most insignificant motor function and facilitates the performance of intense repetitive movements to increase the plasticity of the nervous system.

◾ The simulator's software includes game tasks that are aimed at achieving the goal, keeping the patient's attention, and also increasing his/her motivation. Each functional, diagnostic or interactive game with several levels of difficulty allows the patient, even in the case of a significant loss of motor functions, to perform certain movements in a three-dimensional range with the activation of the necessary muscles. Separate modes for the wrist, elbow and shoulder joints are used.

◾ The device adapts to the anatomy of any adult patient because the exoskeleton and built-in springs allow to cover the entire arm from shoulder to wrist, helping to make active movements synchronously with computer games.

Patients practice everyday sequences of movements on a computer with a three-dimensional image. For example, in a virtual room, they train to catch falling drops with a glass or put fruit in a shopping basket. The device with a grip sensor withstands the weight of the patient's hand, strengthening the weakened function of the hand and supporting its active movement. Thanks to the grip sensor, patient can train the functions of the hand and arm simultaneously along the entire motor chain. For realistic exercises, the patient can take real objects, such as a glass. Built-in sensors register the movements of each joint throughout the workout, provide biofeedback.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

• The ability to restore the motor functions of the arms, to carry out effective rehabilitation of the patient
• Self-training of arms and hands for patients with moderate and severe disabilities
• Registration of the minor movements of the hands, their conversion in real time on the screen into larger ones and compensation of the weight of the arms allow using the device, including in cases when the human ability to move is very small
• Assessment of motor abilities and coordination, documentation and selection of the optimal level of complexity
• Demonstrating progress to the patient
• Motivation not only by demonstrating progress but also by enjoying video games.
